Our Adoption

Throughout our marriage and dating relationsip the Lord really showed us His heart for the world and specifically orphans. Adam and I have loved sharing the Gospel in…Africa, India, Philippines, Haiti, Central America, Albania…and now we’re praying that the Lord will give us two children from The Congo so that we may literally be His hands and feet in our home, not only with Ellie and Macy, but children He has hand picked for us in Africa!

June, 2011- Private adoption process began with assistance from Share Adoptions in Texas
July, 2011- Requested information from Dillion International for homestudy (first step in the process)
July, 2011- Referred to Oklahoma Home Study and Heritage Family Services because Dillion doesn’t do private
adoption home studies
July, 2011- Filled out the H.I.S.Home Children’s Home adoption application. Their website is http://www.hishomeforchildren.com/. We also found out that we could not do a private adoption with H.I.S. Home so we’ll officially be clients with Sparrow’s Home Adoption/Share Adoptions once we want to start the process.
August 22nd, 2011 we found out we’re expecting another child of our own…. So we’ll most likely be adopting from Haiti in about 2 years!
May, 2012- Adam visited H.I.S. Home in Haiti for the first time. He went to see the facility and meet the staff.
June, 2012- Share Adoption changed names to Sparrow’s Home Adoptions. They told us to apply September 1st to officially start the adoption process. Their website is http://sparrowshomeadoptions.org/.
June, 2012- Sparrow informed us that H.I.S. Home would be having a “Bonding Trip” in November and that we could attend this trip if we do our home study beforehand. A bonding trip is a trip to the orphanage where you can chose your children and/or a trip to visit them, for up to a week, once you’ve selected or by assigned to a child or children.
June 18th, 2012- We completed our home study application with Oklahoma Home Study. This process should take about 6 weeks to complete. Their website is http://www.oklahomahomestudy.com/.
August 1st, 2012- We chose a private home study provider and began the paperwork process
October 10th, 2012- We switched agency’s and orphanages because of a referal and information we found out about the new Hague rules in Haiti. We’ve applied to Voice of the Orphan agency and Giving Hope Rescue Mission. Their websites are: http://voiceoforphan.com/ http://www.givinghopehaiti.org/
December 2012- We were approved by Voice of the Orphan to use them as our agency and orphanage.
January 25th, 2013- Our dossier was delivered to Haiti to start the in country process.
April 29th, 2013- We decided to pull our dossier from Haiti and prayerfully consider where the Lord was calling us to adopt from after the door to Haiti was closed for us
May 6th, 2013- The Lord opened the door to the Republic of the Congo for our adoption through All Blessing International. Their website is: http://www.allblessings.org
July 8th, 2013- We finished transferring our home study and dossier over from Haiti to The Congo. We mailed our I-600 application on July 9th.
August 25th, 2013- We accepted a referral for a brother and sister pair from The Congo!!!!!
September 5th, 2013- Our case was complete to begin the court phase of the DRC adoption process.
January 27th, 2014- We completed court and officially have two new Barnett’s in our family.

  1. My one thought….FANTASTIC!!!!! Can’t wait to see what God has in store for all the Barnholts & Barnetts!! So proud of you 3! Guess that was 3 thoughts! Love, BG

  2. My mom grew up in Haiti – so for as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to eventually adopt from there someday to bring a little love of Haiti home to our already part “Haitian” family 🙂 BUT – they do have pretty strict requirements… Can I ask how you guys got past the “no previous biological children” rule? Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your experience!!
